So when it was time for the Book Fair I was racking my brain trying to think of ways to get 7th and 8th graders motivated to even look at the books on the racks. I decided to try the speed dating activity because they did have so much fun with it. Last year they got 45 minutes to come to the book fair.

They found it was hilarious to change names, they were Peppa Pig, Tinker Bell, etc. Some of them were 95 years old, some were just 1 or 2. I clapped every 2 minutes, they had to change partners then.

Speed dating has been popular in larger metropolitan areas in recent years. The people attending one recent speed dating session in a city say while they love their city, they all feel it is hard to meet new people. In a typical session, five men and five women will rotate, having six-minute conversations with each other.

One of the issues that I try to address in the classroom is to have each student talking with the other students about their academic work. If you have students in groups, some will dominate and some will play wall flower. With speed learning, students are challenged to have several one on one conversations with the other students.

To differentiate, use a mix of difficulties. If you will have the whole class working together, you need as many problems as students. If you are breaking the class into two distinct groups, you need half as many problems as students, but two copies. Arrange your desks in two rows facing each other, like this: Each student gets a problem. Here’s where you can differentiate, by giving quick workers more difficult problems. Not necessarily a hard task but it is something they need practice on solving. Basically the desks were lined up with two desks per pod. I had 12 groups.
Look at them working so hard! I made 12 sets of different equations and numbered each set. I then handed out a set to each group being mindful of the level of difficulty when I initially handed them out. When they were done I checked their answers and helped clear up any mistakes. After students had become experts at their problem, I had the student sitting In the middle isle change desks behind them so they were sitting with a new person that had a different problem.
