The receptacle is usually marked “Travel Trailer Use Only”. The receptacle is wired with three wires from the breaker panel and requires a single, dedicated 30 amp breaker. The three wires are one V black , a ground usually bare or green and a neutral white. The terminals on the back of the receptacle will be marked with G and perhaps a green screw , W and perhaps a silver screw and maybe B and perhaps a brass screw but in many cases, the last terminal is not marked. The neutral goes to the side marked ‘W’ for white and the black hot wire goes to the remaining screw as shown. Before using the outlet, make sure you check the polarity with a tester. It is worthwhile noting that many modern electrical devices switches, duplex outlets, receptacles, etc. Some people believe that the 50 amp RV receptacle is a “special” part.

It was a great campground. We have been traveling for 70 days and this was one of the best places we stayed. The office personnel were wonderful, and we dealt with 3 different people during our stay. All were very pleasant and helpful. The spaces each had a patio which was such a nice feature. You were not dragging dirt inside your rv.

Contact Author A Couple Can Camp Comfortably in the Heat Normally, my wife and I spend a lot of time in our RV, usually just the two of us, and we have developed our own routines, including for how and when we do certain things in our RV. When we stay at an older campground that has not upgraded to amp service, we have to do some serious rationing of power. But we make do. Especially when it’s just the two of us. On this trip we are speaking of, we were staying in a amp campground we had used before, in the spring, summer, and fall, and where we had never had any problems with our RV or its appliances, AC, heat, or fridge.

We were connected to the site’s utilities, including AC power, water supply, and a sewer hookup. But we were comfortable in our RV with the air conditioner just humming along, and we’d been judicious with our power usage. We thought to ourselves, “Camping life is great. Source Visiting Grandchildren Are Power Hogs But on this day we did one, simple, unknowing thing that changed everything for us.

We invited our teenaged grandson, who lived a few miles away from the campground, and a friend of his to stay with us in our RV for a few days. Of course, my daughter jumped at the opportunity probably just to get some peace and quiet and we picked up the boys the next morning. As we drove through the campground to our site, the boys started with the “Wows.

The trailer does NOT have an air conditioner. How difficult would it be to convert the electrical system from the 50 amp service to a 30 amp service? I know a 30 amp cable is a lot lighter than a 50 amp cable so I am looking to see if I can save some weight due to not having to carry the heavier cable among other things that are not needed.

Index Home About Blog From: John De Armond Subject: Mon, 03 Jan Used one for years with my catering trailers. It allows supplying a total of amps of volt loads. No worry about overloading the cordage laying out on the ground. The rating is conservative for when the cord is enclosed. Laying out on the ground I’ve found that I can crank at least 80 amps through a 10 gauge type SO cord before it gets warm enough to make me uncomfortable.

I carry amp breakers including a amp volt breaker made by cutting a volt breaker apart in my “concession survival kit” that I can install and pull near amps of volt power.

Posted on Sunday December 14, Douglas Keister provides us an informative and entertaining History of RVing in this one-hour documentary. On five days in , all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone. The National Park Service will waive all entrance fees on five days in If it happens again and the RV power pedestal has a amp outlet you can use it instead of the amp outlet.

All you need is the right adapter. There are different types of adapters but the most common power adapter is often called a dog bone because of how it looks. Below is an explanation of why this works. An RV power pedestal 30 amp outlet has a single leg and breaker rated at 30 amps at volts along with a neutral leg and ground. An RV power pedestal 50 amp outlet has two volt legs that supply current to the RV plus a neutral and ground. Each power leg can supply volts to neutral or the two can supply volts from Leg 1 to Leg 2.

The outlet is protected by a double breaker rated at 50 amps on each leg.

How can a 50 amp hookup possibly run an air conditioner in an RV

Share Tweet Many RV owners hate the constant battle to power their desired electrical appliances on 30 amp service. Is it possible to convert your RV from 30 amp service to 50 amp service? Surprisingly, you can convert a 30 amp RV for use with a 50 amp pedestal.

Jun 17,  · We were able to get the LAST spot available with full hookups (in a really nice park we’ve been wanting to try out) over Labor Day weekend. After all was said and done, I noticed that the site was a 50amp hookup.

Hooking up a amp vehicle to a amp power pedestal whenever possible will help protect the long-term dependability of appliances in your rig, Finch says. The breakers for the electrical systems in most campgrounds are designed with a tolerance of percent, plus or minus. If breakers tripped at exactly 30 amps, they would cost much more — perhaps 10 times as much — as breakers normally used. A amp outlet supplies 3, watts 30 amps multiplied by volts.

Therefore, the breaker on that outlet could meet code and still trip anywhere between a total load of 2, watts 80 percent of 3, watts and 4, watts percent of 3, watts. That sets up a situation where the breaker on a amp outlet may not trip until the load exceeds 4, watts. For amp service, however, the potential amount of power used — 12, watts, or 50 amps times volts — represents more than three times as much possible demand as amp service.

Conversely, a amp rig hooked up to a amp outlet is only getting about one-third of the power that the rig may need to run a full complement of appliances. The same principle applies to the design of electrical circuits in commercial buildings and campgrounds. And an overload causes the same result in every case — a tripped breaker and, possibly, a burned-out plugin. Ultimately, Finch asks owners of amp rigs to consider the economics. They may be saving a few dollars per night by plugging into amp service.
